SeaShare: Combating Hunger One Fish At A Time

seashare icon512We’re FoodservicePromos and we’re all about food. We love sharing everything from awesome rebates and promotions to the latest kitchen tips and tricks (check out the FSP blog). We also love sharing news about great causes. And we’ve found one to share.

Ever heard of SeaShare?

SeaShare, founded in 1994, is a nonprofit that helps the seafood industry donate to hunger-relief efforts in the United States. It all started with a small group of selfless commercial fishermen in Alaska. Instead of throwing back their bycatch, which is required by law, they gave those fish to food banks; a vital, healthy protein source.

Over the last 20 years, SeaShare created a bycatch donation program, which led to changes to the National Marine Fisheries Service regulations in Alaska – allowing the retention of bycatch solely for use by hunger-relief agencies. Thus far, over 200 million seafood servings have been distributed. Additionally, SeaShare accumulated a constantly-growing list of fishermen, processors, freight companies, food banks, and financial donors across the country.

A handful of companies helping SeaShare combat hunger have awesome rebates available, which are housed on our site – King & Prince Seafood, High Liner Foods, Tampa Maid, and Trident Seafoods.

If you’re interested in donating (each $100 donation = 800 servings of seafood to food banks) or becoming a partner, visit the SeaShare Donation page
