KP krabbycakesSustainability, a complex concept, is the process of seeking to maintain change in a balanced way, so not to disrupt current and future potential.

This can be in reference to the environment, energy, humans, horticulture, or industry - even living.

That said, in mentioning the environment and industry, the seafood industry has been the focus of sustainability, as of late.

The U.S. is one of the largest consumers of seafood, and our choices and actions matter when it comes to our oceans and their health. Destructive fishing practices and overfishing are contributing to the decline of entire fishing industries, such as the cod industry; the marlin and bluefin tuna industries are also at risk of extinction.

According to the United Nations FAO, since the 50’s 29% of commercial fish species have suffered collapse. Further, over half of our world’s oceans are prone to industrial scale fishing practices (Oceana.org, 2018). Hence, the decline of entire fishing industries.

In addition to the demise of entire fishing industries, unintended bycatch is also at risk. This ranges from underweight fish too small to sell to seabirds, dolphins, sea turtles, and whales (Ocean.si.edu, 2018).

Needless to say, change is imperative.

The U.S. has made a concerted effort and continues to implement sustainable, science-based fishery management practices for wild-caught and farmed fish, and shellfish. But, the foodservice industry must play its part, too.

That said, King & Prince are among other seafood companies making adjustments. With over 65 years of industry experience, the company’s broad portfolio consists of sustainable products and practices.

Committed to seafood sustainability, King & Prince is dedicated to developing and maintaining relationships with certified fishing and farming operations. With over 25+ products that fall under either certification, King & Prince prides itself on providing their customers with traceable seafood solutions.

By collaborating with sustainable seafood organizations and adhering to certification standards and practices, King & Prince is setting an example for the foodservice industry.
